Choosing between a nurse and a caretaker for your parent
06 Oct 2026
The most common question we hear from families is: "Do we need a nurse or a caretaker?" The answer depends on whether the patient needs medical tasks or help with daily living.
Choose a nurse when
- There are injections, IV lines, catheters or wound dressings
- Vitals need to be monitored and charted
- The patient was recently discharged from ICU
Choose a caretaker when
- The person needs help with bathing, toileting, meals and walking
- Medicines are tablets that just need reminders
- Company and safety are the main concerns
Many families start with a nurse for the first week after discharge, then move to a caretaker. Our coordinators can help you plan this.
